LAST NOVEMBER, I RAN FOR SCHOOL BOARD BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT THIS COMMUNITY AND THIS DISTRICT ARE AT A CROSSROADS. AHEAD OF US IS AN EXCITING, ALBEIT CHALLENGING FUTURE. OUR STUDENTS HAVE A REMARKABLE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW IN A MULTILINGUAL, MULTICULTURAL CITY THAT TRULY REPRESENTS OUR NATION. SADLY, THIS IS A CROSSROAD WHERE THE EVOLUTION OF OUR DISTRICT ALSO INTERSECTS WITH MAJOR STATE AND FEDERAL TRENDS THAT AIM TO UNDERMINE OUR KIDS' FUTURE BY MISREPRESENTING AND HAMPERING THE SKILLS THAT OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES BRING TO THE TABLE. I RAN BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT THIS SCHOOL BOARD NEEDED AMONG THEIR RANKS SOMEONE WITH A DEEPER, DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT OUR MULTILINGUAL FAMILIES NEED AND HOW EVERY STUDENT IN THIS DISTRICT WILL BENEFIT FROM STRENGTHENING THE PROGRAMS THAT MAKES SIOUX CITY UNIQUE. I AM CONFIDENT THAT THE 2,900 PEOPLE THAT SUPPORTED MY CANDIDACY SHARE MY HOPES FOR THIS DISTRICT. AFTER THE NOVEMBER ELECTION, I JOINED THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE BECAUSE I COULD NOT SIT IDLE WHEN I COULD BE HELPING OUR STUDENTS IN SOME CAPACITY. I WILL HAVE PREFERRED TO SERVE IN BETTER CIRCUMSTANCES, AND I WISH FORMER DIRECTOR GEORGE A SPEEDY RECOVERY, BUT MY DRIVE AND MY COMMITMENT TO SERVE THIS DISTRICT HAS NOT, HAS NOT DWINDLED. ALMOST 6 YEARS AGO, I MADE THE TRANSITION FROM BEING A TEACHER, A FULL-TIME TEACHER AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL, TO BE AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR. I STARTED AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA, SPECIFICALLY WITH BLACK AND LATINO STUDENTS AS A RETENTION SPECIALIST, AND THEN I MOVED TO WESTERN IOWA TECH WHERE I STAYED UNDERGRAD AT IOWA OF $3,000 FOR THE SAME, WITH THE SAME GOALS, RETENTION AND PERSISTENCE. SO, IN MY 6 YEARS AS ADVISOR, I'VE WORKED SPECIFICALLY WITH POPULATIONS AT RISK, AND I SAY AT RISK NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE BAD STUDENTS BUT BECAUSE THEIR SOCIOECONOMIC SITUATIONS USUALLY, IF THEY ENDED UP IN MY PLATE IS BECAUSE THEY WERE MORE CHALLENGING THAN THE TRADITIONAL STUDENT. SO, I'VE TRAINED MYSELF, AND I WENT THROUGH A SPECIFIC TRAINING TO HELP THE STUDENTS IN THE AREA, PARTICULARLY OF FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS, RIGHT, OR STUDENTS IN MINORITIES, HOW BETTER TO ADAPT TO COLLEGE. IN THAT PROCESS, I'VE SEEN A LOT OF RECENT HIGH SCHOOLERS RIGHT, BARELY NOT HIGH SCHOOLERS ANYMORE, THAT STRUGGLE TO BECOME UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. SO I THINK I CAN BRING TO THE TABLE ALSO AND TO THE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE PROFESSIONALS IN THE SCHOOL AND HOW TO BETTER PREPARE OUR STUDENTS TO DO THAT. THANK YOU. THAT INCLUDES STRONG PROGRAMMING FOR ALL STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OFTEN TOO OVERLOOKED, LIKE ENGLISH LEARNERS, STUDENTS WITH IEPS AND 504S, AND EVEN GIFTED LEARNERS. EVERY STUDENT MATTERS, AND EVERY EDUCATOR DESERVES THE SUPPORT TO MEET THOSE NEEDS. FINALLY, CULTURE MATTERS, AND RIGHT NOW IT NEEDS CLARITY. IN MY 25 YEARS OF PUBLIC EDUCATION SERVICE, I LEARNED THIS: STRONG ORGANIZATIONS DON'T RUN ON DRAMA, THEY RUN ON EXPECTATIONS, CLEAR EXPECTATIONS, THE RIGHT RESOURCES, AND TRUST IN PEOPLE TO DO THEIR JOBS. ALL THREE OF MY CHILDREN HAVE GRADUATED FROM THE DISTRICT, AND BECAUSE OF THAT, I BELIEVE I SEE FIRSTHAND BOTH THE STRENGTHS THE AREAS WHERE WE STILL HAVE WORK TO DO. I DON'T STAND HERE CLAIMING TO HAVE EVERY ANSWER. WHAT I DO BRING IS REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE, A WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN, A STRONG BELIEF IN THAT BETTER DECISIONS HAPPEN WHEN DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES ARE WELCOMED AT THE TABLE. I'VE WORKED AS A PARENT VOLUNTEER, A COMMUNITY LEADER, A NAVY VETERAN, AND THOSE EXPERIENCES HAVE TAUGHT ME THE IMPORTANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY, TEAMWORK, AND PUTTING OTHERS FIRST. IF I COULD DESCRIBE MY APPROACH IN 3 SIMPLE IDEAS, THEY WOULD BE TRANSPARENCY, SOLUTION-BASED COMMUNICATION, AND KEEPING KIDS AT THE CENTER OF EVERY DECISION. TRANSPARENCY BUILDS TRUST. PEOPLE DON'T EXPECT PERFECTION, BUT THEY DO EXPECT HONESTY AND CLEAR COMMUNICATION. WHEN FAMILIES, TEACHERS, AND THE BOARD WORKS WITH OPENNESS AND INTEGRITY, IT CREATES STRONGER PARTNERSHIPS AND BETTER OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS. SECOND, WE NEED TO FOCUS MORE ON SOLUTIONS THAN PROBLEMS. IT'S EASY TO POINT OUT WHAT'S WRONG AND ISN'T WORKING, BUT REAL PROGRESS HAPPENS WHEN WE ASK, WHAT CAN WE DO NEXT? A SOLUTION-FOCUSED MINDSET TURNS DISAGREEMENT INTO COLLABORATION AND HELPS MOVE OUR DISTRICT FORWARD INSTEAD OF HOLDING IT BACK. AND FINALLY, EVERYTHING MUST COME BACK TO THE KIDS. AND, AND ALSO THE PARENTS KNOW THEIR STUDENTS. SO IT'S JUST, WE, WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE TALKING TO THE PARENTS, WE HAVE THAT COMMUNICATION SO THAT WAY WE CAN BRIDGE THAT GAP.
