I'M AWARE THAT MOST OF YOU WERE NOT ON THIS BOARD WHEN A LOT OF THIS DISRESPECT HAPPENED. THAT IS WHY I'M HERE TONIGHT, TO HELP EDUCATE YOU ON WHAT THIS DISTRICT HAS DONE TO THE IRVING FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES IN THE PAST. I KNOW MR. GREENWELL'S BEEN DOWN HERE TELLING YOU HOW MY STUDENTS' SCHOOLS SHOULD NOT BE FUNDED ANYMORE FOR DUAL LANGUAGE. SO, I ASK, DO WE KNOW THE FUNDING IRVING USES THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS? IRVING DOES NOT HAVE EXTRA STAFFING FOR THEIR PROGRAM, MEANING THEY HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF TEACHERS AS OTHER SCHOOLS. THEY HAVE A PROGRAM IN SPANISH CALLED AMIRA THAT COSTS AROUND $20,000 A YEAR. THEY ALSO USE CONSUMABLES FOR THEIR READING PROGRAM BENCHMARK THAT COST A COUPLE OF THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE. THAT IS LESS THAN $25,000 A YEAR FOR A PROGRAM THAT HAS AND CONTINUES TO BENEFIT HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS EVERY YEAR. DURING THE LAST PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, THIS BOARD UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED $47,450 FOR STYLUS PENS IN THE BUDGET. IF WE HAVE DISPOSABLE MONEY TO REPLACE OUR FINGERS WITH PENS FOR TOUCHSCREENS, THEN WE SHOULD HAVE HALF THAT AMOUNT TO BENEFIT HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO IRVING THE PAST TEN YEARS WOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN TO A NODLIN OR A SUNNYSIDE. WHEN THE SCHOOL BOARD REDREW THESE BOUNDARY LINES IN 2021, THEY SAID IT WAS BECAUSE NORTH MIDDLE HAD TOO MANY STUDENTS. ACCORDING TO THE IOWA SCHOOL PERFORMANCE PROFILE, THE NUMBERS FOR NORTH MIDDLE HAVE BEEN FAIRLY CONSISTENT. DESPITE A SPIKE IN 2021, THE NUMBERS ARE ALL WITHIN 100 STUDENTS. SO, I ASK, TOO MANY OF WHAT KIND OF STUDENTS? THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE. THIS DISTRICT HAS DESTROYED THE RELATIONSHIPS, FRIENDSHIPS, AND COMMUNITY OF IRVING FOR WHAT? SO, YOU COULD HAVE ONE OR TWO LESS KIDS IN A MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOM. YOU SEND MY KIDS AND THEIR FRIENDS TO EAST MIDDLE, WHICH IS 5.6 MILES AWAY, WHILE NORTH MIDDLE IS 3.9 MILES AWAY AND WEST MIDDLE IS 3.8. YOU WILL SAY THAT WE ARE ONLY AN EAST AND WEST FEEDER. WHILE THAT MAY BE TECHNICALLY TRUE DUE TO YOUR NEW LINES, IRVING SENDS OVER HALF HIS STUDENTS TO NORTH MIDDLE EVERY SINGLE YEAR. THAT MEANS THESE STUDENTS GET SPLIT TO ALL THREE MIDDLE SCHOOLS. THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO ANY OTHER SCHOOL. YOU MANIPULATED PARENTS WHO LACK THE POWER OF VOICE AND WHO BATTLE LANGUAGE BARRIERS. YOU ALSO CHERRY-PICK WHICH TRANSFERS TO ALLOW. THERE IS NO CONSISTENCY IN THESE APPROVALS. IT IS A WHO-DO-YOU-KNOW SCENARIO. WHEN YOU REDREW THE LINES, AN EMAIL WENT OUT TO PARENTS FROM DR. GOSMAN ON JANUARY 27, 2021, WHO WAS OUR SUPERINTENDENT AT THE TIME. IT STATED, AND I QUOTE, "THE DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE WITHOUT INTERRUPTION WITH SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE. SINCE THE IRVING DUAL LANGUAGE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WILL NOW ATTEND MORE THAN ONE SECONDARY SCHOOL, THE DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM WILL BE EXPANDED TO MORE SECONDARY SCHOOLS, THEREBY INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL STUDENTS." THIS NEVER HAPPENED. MY OLDEST CHILD, AND NOW MY DAUGHTER, ARE GOING THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL [00:05:01] WITHOUT ANY SPANISH, AS ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER STUDENTS. WE DON'T ACCEPT EXCUSES FROM OUR STUDENTS WHEN THEY ARE MISSING WORK OR HAVE BEHAVIOR ISSUES, AND AS A PARENT, I DON'T ACCEPT EXCUSES FROM THIS DISTRICT EITHER. THERE ARE WAYS TO FILL THE POSITIONS. YOU CHOOSE NOT TO USE THOSE OPTIONS. THE EXCUSES US PARENTS HAVE HEARD FROM THE DISTRICT ARE NOT OUR PROBLEM. THEY ARE YOURS. MR. I WENT WITH MY DAUGHTER AND WIFE TO CELEBRATE WITH THEM. WHILE THERE, I COUNTED THE NUMBER OF IRVING STUDENTS WALKING AND RECEIVING THEIR DIPLOMA. I DON'T KNOW THEM ALL OR REMEMBER THEM, BUT I COUNTED AT LEAST 60. IF YOU DO THE MATH, THAT IS ROUGHLY 20% OF THE GRADUATING CLASS. YET, THEIR PRINCIPAL WAS NOT ON STAGE WITH THEM. THE PERRY CREEK, BRYANT, AND LEEDS PRINCIPALS WERE THERE. NONE OF THESE PEOPLE WERE THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS OF THESE STUDENTS. THE ONE PRINCIPAL WHO WAS, MARIA WAYLESS, WAS NOT INVITED TO BE THERE FOR HER STUDENTS. I KNOW THIS DISTRICT WILL SAY ONLY THE FEEDER SCHOOLS ARE INVITED.
